EGLE grant to help revitalize vacant Lansing industrial site and create new jobs
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is awarding a $470,000 Brownfield Redevelopment Grant to a project that will clean up a vacant industrial site and create new jobs in Lansing. The 2.5-acre site at 2231 West Willow Street was first developed as a furniture and textile manufacturer in 1929. It also hosted a felt manufacturer, metal heating treatment company, and a paper and packaging manufacturer until it was left vacant in 2018.
The property’s long industrial past has left it contaminated with PFAS and chlorinated solvents. The EGLE grant will be used for environmental investigations, selective demolition, asbestos abatement, and the installation of a vapor venting system for the building.
The owner plans to rehabilitate the existing 33,786 square-foot building and use it for two businesses: an auto body and paint shop, and a used auto parts sales and recycling shop. The $2.2 million project is expected to create 30 new full-time jobs in skilled trades, technical services, and administrative roles. It fits into the city of Lansing’s development priorities by reinvesting in an aging industrial corridor and reducing sprawl and blight. “The City of Lansing is thrilled to see this grant from EGLE to help clean up this contaminated site,” Mayor Andy Schor said. “I want to thank EGLE for recognizing this site and providing critical funding for redevelopment.” Construction is expected to be finished by early 2027.
More than half of EGLE’s annual budget supports local projects, protects public health and the environment, and helps create economic growth and jobs for Michigan workers. Redevelopment increases the value of brownfield sites and other nearby properties. In 2025, the EGLE Brownfield program provided more than $23 million in brownfield incentives to 76 projects in 52 Michigan communities. These projects are projected to create more than 440 housing units, 600 jobs, and result in more than $675 million in capital investment.
